Bill Belichick Says Taylor Price ‘Just Didn’t Work Out,’ But Doesn’t Rule Out Him Someday Returning

FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said two roster situations could remain fluid as time goes on, but they're separate entities even with their relation.

The Patriots promoted center Nick McDonald to the active roster Saturday and released wide receiver Taylor Price to make room.

McDonald "did a real good job" in his first career start, according to Belichick, who was noncommittal about the depth chart moving forward. Dan Connolly has missed two games with a groin injury, and McDonald leapfrogged both Ryan Wendell and Donald Thomas at center last week.

"I don't know how it's going to go," Belichick said Monday. "We'll see, but we always give everybody an opportunity to compete. The guys who do the best get more opportunities. The guys who don't do as well get fewer opportunities until something changes. We'll let the players at [center] and other positions compete, and the guys that we feel like are doing the best job, they'll get more opportunities than guys that don't do as well."

Price had to go through the league's waiver wire through Monday afternoon. The 2010 third-round draft pick was inactive 21 times in 28 games, including last season's playoff loss. Of the seven games in which Price had been in uniform, he did not see the field three times (all this season).

"In the end, it just didn't work out," Belichick said. "That's probably the easiest way to put it."

Belichick was asked if he would consider bringing Price back to the team if he cleared waivers or if the opportunity arose at another time.

"I wouldn't rule anything out," Belichick said.
