Chris Pronger Out for Season With 'Severe Post Concussion Syndrome'Concussions continue to be a hot-button topic in the NHL today, and on Thursday, concussions claimed the season of one of the game's best defensemen.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Thursday that captain Chris Pronger will miss the rest of the season with what Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren called "severe post concussion syndrome."

The 37-year-old has battled injuries all season, after he took a stick to the eye and also had knee surgery already this year. Many have assumed that the concussion symptoms Pronger has been suffering from stem from the stick-to-the-eye incident which he suffered on Oct. 24 against the Maple Leafs. Pronger returned to the Flyers lineup on Nov. 9 and played in five games, but he hasn't played since Nov. 19.

See the Flyers' full statement below.

"After consultation with respected concussion specialists Dr. Joseph Maroon and Dr. Micky Collins, it is the opinion of both doctors that Chris is suffering from severe post concussion syndrome. It is the recommendation of Doctors Maroon and Collins that Chris not return to play for the Philadelphia Flyers for the remainder of the 2011-12 season or playoffs.  Chris will continue to receive treatment and therapy with the hope that he can get better."
