Actors often do some crazy things in the name of nailing a shot for an upcoming film. Gerard Butler flirted with death recently at one of the most notorious surf spots on earth.

Butler was taken to a hospital after a surfing mishap at Mavericks in Northern California while taking part in filming for an upcoming movie, CBS San Francisco reports. Mavericks is notorious for its big waves, and it serves as a popular destination for some of the world’s most accomplished surfers.

Butler, of course, is not one of the world’s best surfers, and he learned that the hard way while doing filming for Of Men and Mavericks, to be released in 2012. Butler was trapped underwater, with waves as high as 15 feet crashing down on him.

“He had that 100-yard stare that surfers get after a two-wave hold-down or near-death experience,” wrote ESPN.com’s Frank Quirarte of the rescue efforts. “After almost 20 years at Maverick’s, I’ve seen a lot of it but it was good to see he was standing on his own two legs.

Gerard was brought to Stanford Medical Center and later released after medical examination.

Of Men and Mavericks is a movie about surfer Jay Moriarty. He surfed Mavericks as a teenager, but he passed away at the age of 23 after a free-diving accident.
