2011 was a banner year for the female athlete. Young stars such as Caroline Wozniacki (tennis) and Yani Tseng (golf) established themselves as forces in their respective sports.

Tameka Catchings still dominated the WNBA, while Danica Patrick continued to improve as a driver and break new ground in motorsports.

The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup captivated imaginations around the world and produced a new generation of heroes in the beautiful game.

Judging by the talent of some of the names on our list, there’s always the potential for some repeat performances in 2012. There are still those who you may have forgotten or who might surprise you, though.
