Matt Reis Inks New Deal With New England Revolution, Will Return As Starting GoalkeeperNew England Revolution supporters all dream of a team of Matt Reis', but will be delighted to make do with just one. Their longtime starting goalkeeper re-signed with Major League Soccer and will return to New England in 2012, according to the club's website.

"Matt has been one of our leaders, on and off the field, since coming to New England, and we're pleased he will remain with us," newly-minted general manager Mike Burns said. "With him re-signing with us, we can continue to look toward his leadership and experience as we move into 2012."

Reis' return ensures the reconstruction of the Revs starts in the right place. The four-time all-star enjoyed a fine 2011, starting 27 games and earning the fans' MVP award despite playing behind a porous defense. He will return for his ninth season as the Revs' starter.

The 36-year-old battled and conquered injury problems that threatened to derail what are normally a goalkeeper's best years. He missed a large part of 2010 with shoulder, knee and ankle problems but remained healthy for most of 2011.

A pair of 24-year-old serve as his deputies. Bobby Shuttleworth and Haverill, Mass., native Tim Murray will compete for backup duties.
