Report: Red Sox Confirm They Did Not Post Bid for Japanese Shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima

An earlier report that the Red Sox may have posted the highest bid for Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima appears to be false.

ESPN.com’s Gordon Edes reports that the Red Sox have confirmed that they did not post on the 29-year-old middle infielder. This contradicts a report by the Japanese media earlier on Tuesday that said the Sox may have the top bid for Nakajima.

Nakajima, currently a member of the Saitama Seibu Lions of Japan’s Pacific League, is a career .302 hitter. He hit .297 with 16 home runs, 100 RBIs and 21 stolen bases this past season.

Seibu is expected to accept the highest bid for Nakajima, at which point the winning team will have 30 days to negotiate a contract with him.

The Red Sox, of course, exercised Marco Scutaro‘s 2012 team option this offseason, still have Jed Lowrie in the mix and have Jose Iglesias coming up through the system, which would have made a move to sign Nakajima an interesting one.
