Dan Carcillo was suspended indefinitely on Tuesday in the wake of his hit on Edmonton's Tom Gilbert.
On Wednesday, Carcillo learned his fate, and he is definitely suspended for seven games, NHL vice president of player safety Brendan Shanahan announced.
Shanahan summed the decision up using three key points. One, the league took into account that the action was boarding.
"Carcillo finishes high and hard with his hands, using the boards as a weapon," Shanahan explained.
Shanahan also said that Gilbert's injury was taken into consideration in the discipline, as was Carcillo's history. This is the 10th time that Carcillo has been disciplined either by fine or suspension.
Carcillo stands to lose more than $66,000 of his $775,000 salary for this season because of the ban.
