Denver Post Columnist Says Bill Belichick Found Way to ‘Cheat the System’ Once Again in Hiring Josh McDaniels for Playoffs

The Patriots’ hiring of Josh McDaniels has one Denver Post columnist so up in arms that he thinks the Broncos and the rest of the NFL playoff teams should protest it.

McDaniels’ return to New England isn’t too surprising given current offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien‘s eventual departure to become head coach at Penn State. But McDaniels is jumping on board immediately as an offensive assistant, which the Denver Post’s Mike Klis just doesn’t feel is right.

“This is the 2011 season. McDaniels finished the 2011 season as the Rams’ offensive coordinator. He got his chance to contribute this year,” Klis writes. “His Rams scored an embarrassing 12.1 points per game, making them easily the league’s lowest scoring offense. His season should be finished.”

Klis opines that no one outside the Broncos organization knows the 2011 Broncos better than McDaniels, who served as Denver’s head coach in 2009 and was fired during the 2010 season.

“He may know Tim Tebow better than John Fox knows Tebow,” Klis writes.

There’s no rule against McDaniels working immediately for the Pats, but Klis feels that the immediate hiring “clearly violates the spirit of fair competition” and that the rest of the playoff teams now have a disadvantage against New England.

It’s an interesting outlook, but considering there are no rules against the hiring, the move is also a rather smart one by Belichick. We won’t know until Saturday night whether McDaniels’ presence has a huge impact on what transpires on the field against the Broncos, but it’s another storyline to a game already filled with plenty.
