After news of the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke and disarray ensued at Penn State, legendary head coach Joe Paterno stayed silent as the program he fought so hard to build was destroyed.

Now, for the first time since the details of the scandal were released, Paterno has decided to sit down for an interview with The Washington Post.

"I didn't know exactly how to handle it and I was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was," he said. "So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didn't work out that way."

The 85-year-old was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, and also broke his pelvis since his dismissal from Penn State. He's now hoping that time will eventually clear him from the court of public opinion, although he's not too concerned about it.

"I'm not 31 years old trying to prove something to anybody," Paterno said during his interview with Sally Jenkins. "I know where I am."

Paterno expressed lament about his handling of the Sandusky scandal.
