“You will probably find a lot more players in their late 30s or even their 40s if they look after themselves,” Giggs, who is nearing 900 appearances for Manchester United, told MUTV.
After starting his career as a left-winger, Giggs has transitioned to a central role in midfield. Known for whipping in crosses with his left foot and playing clever through balls to Manchester United’s forwards, Giggs has shown no sign of burnout. This may prompt him to sign another contract after this season.
“Even though the game is getting quicker, you still need players with a good brain,” Giggs said. “Yes, there are still quicker players around but that quickness of the brain gives you an extra yard.”
Giggs credits the team’s younger players for keeping him sharp, both physically and mentally.
“You have to remain motivated, otherwise you get swept away,” he said. “It’s not just about performing in games but also in training.”
The midfielder has not yet set a retirement date and doesn’t seem likely to do so in the foreseeable future.
“As long as I am enjoying it and still contributing to the team, not making a fool of myself in training or games,” said Giggs.
Long-time teammate Paul Scholes, retired after last season. But he is already back in the team after coming out of retirement to help Manchester United ease its injury crisis in midfield.
