Barack Obama’s Speech at Democratic National Convention Causes NFL to Move 2012 Season Opener to Wednesday

This brings a new meaning to political football.

The NFL announced Tuesday it will hold its 2012 regular-season opener Wednesday, Sept. 5. Since the league launched its NFL Kickoff game in 2002, it's always been held on a Thursday. It has featured the reigning Super Bowl champion since 2004.

This year's date was changed because President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 6, and the NFL wants to avoid a broadcasting conflict.

The Giants will host the game at MetLife Stadium at 8:30 p.m. on NBC. Their opponent will be announced at a later date.
