FORT MYERS, Fla. –– The Red Sox spent Tuesday morning honing their relay throws and cutoffs.

The practice routine prompted a reporter to ask Bobby Valentine about Derek Jeter's infamous flip throw during the 2001 American League Division Series, where he flipped the ball to Jorge Posada, who barely tagged out Oakland's Jeremy Giambi.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine said. "I think [Jeter] was out of position and I think the ball gets [Giambi] out if he doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. And it was more amazing to say they had practiced it. I don't believe it."

It was one of two subtle jabs Valentine took at the Yankees on Tuesday. When asked about his memories of Jason Varitek, the Red Sox manager reminisced about how Varitek "beat up" Yankees third basemen Alex Rodriguez.
