FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox pitchers threw live batting practice for the second straight day on Friday.

After pacing through all the fields at JetBlue Park, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine was especially impressed with one of his veteran hurlers, who was throwing against minor league hitters, from Thursday.

"I thought that [Jon] Lester had really nice downward plane, as they like to say," Valentine said. "I thought he was keeping the ball down well. He had pretty good control of his throwing side of the plate."

Count Daisuke Matsuzaka as another pitcher that has surprised thus far. Although he hasn't thrown live batting practice yet, the Japanese hurler — who is recovering from Tommy John surgery — has continued tossing bullpen sessions.

"Daisuke — that was the best bullpen session he had," Valentine said. "He and Randy Niemann have done a little video work, a little talking. He's just trying to be himself. He had a good finish to his pitches and his delivery. It was pretty good actually for a guy that’s supposedly as far behind as he is, that was a pretty good [bullpen session]."
