NHL Trade Deadline Live Blog: Canucks Reportedly Deal Cody Hodgson for Zack Kassian

by

Feb 27, 2012

3:43 p.m.: Hodgson, who just turned 22, was the 10th-overall pick in 2008 — two spots ahead of Tyler Myers, his new teammate.

Buffalo also sends Marc-Andre Gragnani to Vancouver.

3:34 p.m.: According to McKenzie, there's a "big deal brewing" between Vancouver and Buffalo that involves 13th overall pick ('09), Zack Kassian.

"Big deal brewing. Hearing BUF's Zack Kassian is going to VAN."

Kassian has 3-4-7 in 27 games this year.

It sounds Cody Hodgson is heading from VAN to BUF for Kassian. Hodgson has 16-17-33 in 63 games played this season.

3:26 p.m.:
Some more on Rolston:

In 225 career March games, he has 125 (51 goals) and is a plus-26. In 94 April games, he has 48 points (20 tallies).

His best year in Boston came during the 2001-02 season when he lit the lamp 31 times and helped out on 31 more in 82 contests. Along with a plus-11, he led the league with nine shorthanded goals.

Rolston also happens to be the active leader in shorties scored with 33 — five ahead of Martin St. Louis.

3:22 p.m.: Rangers fans can't be too mad at the NYR brass for not landing Nash, if what Dreger tweets is true:

"Don't know details, but indications are NYR made a mammoth offer for Rick Nash today and CBJ declined."

3:19 p.m.: Back to the Gaustad deal, the Sabres also shipped a fourth-round pick to the Preds with Gaustad for the first rounder, says Bob McKenzie.

3:18 p.m.: According to Mark Spector, defenseman John Scott is heading to the Rangers for a fifth round pick.

3:10 p.m.:
According to reports, the B's also picked up defenseman Greg Zanon, which has been confirmed by Bob McKenzie, among others.

McKenzie tweets that Zanon is for Steve Kampfer.

Zanon has two goals and four assists and a minus-1 in 39 games with the Wild.

3:04 p.m.: The B's have also landed Mike Mottau in the Rolston deal, according to reports.

Mottau, a Quincy native and former Boston College standout (and Hobey Baker Award winner), has played just 49 total games over the last two seasons between the Rangersr and Isles.

3:03 p.m.: Paul Gaustad has been dealt to Nashville Predators, according to LeBrun.

2:55 p.m.: According to NESN analyst Billy Jaffe, the B's have acquired Brian Rolston.

The Islander will call Boston home for the second time in his career, as he spent 2000-04 in the Hub.

Rolston has four goals and nine helpers to go with a minus-12 in 40 games this year.

This move also means that two players — Rolston and Sami Pahlsson — involved in the deal that sent Ray Bourque to the Avs 12 years ago were traded today.

2:41 p.m.: The Nash saga isn't dead yet.

According to Kypreos, the "#Leafs will not make final push on # Bluejackets Nash. #Rangers and #Sharks still trying."

Pierre LeBrun tweets that the Jackets are still asking the Sharks to send Couture back to Columbus, but San Jose won't budge.

2:38 p.m.: The fair-skinned (red head) Commodore is having fun with his deadline deal to Florida, as he tweeted:

"Get the #sunscreen ready… #spf70 #Tampa."

2:33 p.m.: According to Deb Placey of MSG, there will be "a couple" of trades announced after the 3 p.m. ET deadline today, because "trade calls at NHL offices backed up."

2:30 p.m.: Dreger tweets: "Nash said to be almost emotionally drained by this process. Probably a fair bit of frustration as well."

2:29 p.m.:
Portzline tweets that the "Situation behind the scenes between #CBJ and Rick Nash has turned frantic, as suitors are making late push for #CBJ captain."

2:26 p.m.: So the Bruins missed out on a handful of rumored targets, including Oduya, Winnik and Galiardi. If rumors mean anything, then two players left on their reported radar — Avs forward David Jones and Canes defensman Jaro Spacek — are still available as we head down the final stretch.

Buckle up, B's fans!

2:10 p.m.: According to Darren Dreger, the Jets trade defenseman Johnny Oduya to the Blackhawks. This tidbit was tweeted by McKenzie.

Winnipeg will receive two draft picks — a second- and third-rounder in '13, says Dreger — for the 30-year-old blue-liner.

2:05 p.m.:
Brian Lee is heading from Ottawa to Tampa for Matt Gilroy, tweets Garrioch.

Gilroy, of Boston University fame, has 17 points (15 assists) and a plus-2 in 53 games for the Bolts this year. Lee was a ninth-overall pick in 2005.

1:58 p.m.
: Sportsnet is reporting that Blue Jacket Sami Pahlsson is now heading to the Canucks for two fourth-round draft picks.

Pahlsson has two goals and nine helpers in 61 games this year. Bruins fans may remember Sami as one of the young players the B's received from the Avs in the Ray Bourque trade 12 years ago.

1:55 p.m.:
LeBrun has some bad news for Bruins fans and good news for Sharks fans.

"Hearing San Jose Sharks have acquired Daniel Winnik AND T.J. Galiardi from Colorado."

McKenzie adds that there is a seventh-round pick tossed in, as well. No news yet on what the Sharks are coughing up.

1:51 p.m.:
It sounds like the Sharks are high on Colorado's Daniel Winnik, tweets McKenzie. Winnik, a former UNH standout, is also believed to be on the Bruins radar.

1:43 p.m.: The Leafs have shipped defenseman Keith Aulie to Tampa Bay for Carter Ashton, tweets McKenzie.

Aulie, 22, stands 6-foot-6 and was picked 117th overal in 2007. He appeared in 40 games for the Leafs last year, scoring twice and racking up 32 PIMs. He's made 17 appearances this year, registering two helpers and 16 PIMs.

Ashton, a 20-year-old winger, was plucked 29th overall in 2009. He has 35 points (19 goals) in 56 games for the Norfolk Admirals this year.

1:36 p.m.: It sounds like Oduya is heading to one of three teams: The Rangers, Bruins or Blackhawks. Not a bad set of options for the defenseman, who will likely be escaping Win-Vegas for a huge market team.

"I try not to pay too much attention to what’s going on," Oduya told the Free Press. "Whatever’s going to happen, happens and it’s out of my control.

"I’m kind of in the dark with everything," he added. "It’s management’s decision. We’ll see what’s going to happen. I’m very happy here. I’ve been battling with these guys the whole year and trying to make the playoffs and that’s what’s in my mind right now. If that changes later on today it’s going to be a new chapter. But I’m focused on what I have to do tonight."

1:24 p.m.:
Did things just turn ugly in Wild country?

Sounds like the locker room was turned a little off kilter after the Schultz trade, according to a few tweets from Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

"This is one stunned, silent Locker room. Schultz is shaken, calling wife before he talks to media. #mnwild."

"Schultz is stunned; looking forward to playing on a good, young, up and coming Oilers team. Tough loss for everyone personally around Wild."

"Nick Schultz wasn't even told by #mnwild that he was traded before #oilers tweeted it. Pretty ticked off organization here."

"To clarify, Schultz was told by Chuck Fletcher right after practice — after the #oilers tweeted it. Teammates found out from media #mnwild."

1:18 p.m.:
It sounds like Jaroslav Spacek will be packing his bags at some point today.

According to Shannon, Carolina will hang on to Bryan Allen, as seen in the tweet below. Shannon translates this into flight plans for Spacek.

"Canes confirm that Bryan Allen is off the market. Will not be traded…that means Spacek will go."

12:58 p.m.: Oilers and Wild swap defensemen Tom Gilbert and Nick Schultz, says Mark Spector.

Cap hit is similiar, as Shannon points out:

"TGilbert from Edm has two more years with 4 Mil Cap hit…to Minn for NSchultz who has 2 more years with cap hit of 3.6 Mil."

12:51 p.m.: Dreger has some Ott trade rumor tidbits:

"Stars telling teams Ott won't be traded unless a 'great' deal is offered. So much interest in him…could happen."

12:44 p.m.: According to Kypreos, the Red Wings have sent Mike Commodore to Tampa Bay in exchange for a conditional pick.

Commodore won a Gold medal with Team Canada in 2007. GM of that team was Steve Yzerman, too.

12:37 p.m.:
Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash will not speak to media after practice, according to the club.

12:28 p.m.:
According to Garrioch, former Bruin defenseman Dennis Wideman could be leaving D.C. and landing in Chicago.

"The Hawks have shown interest in Washington D Dennis Wideman He could still go in the next three hours."

12:19 p.m.: For those keeping track, Kris Russell (Blue Jackets), Brian Rolston (Islanders), Eric Boulton (Devils), Krys Kolanos (Flames) have all cleared waivers.

12:14 p.m.: LeBrun tweets "10 teams have inquired on Steve Ott in Dallas….. Vancouver remains among list of clubs that covet him but won't overpay."

For the record, Bruins fans aren't down with O-T-T, and B's brass likely isn't, either.

12:06 p.m.:
Jets just claimed Grant Clitsome off waivers. Oduya packing his bags?

Noon: Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch says "#CBJ senior adviser Craig Patrick they have 'more than 15' offers to consider on a handful of players, but 'we don't like any of them yet.'"

11:47 a.m.:
Despite rumors all weekend of Mikhail Grabovski leaving Toronto, it now seems like the Leafs are going to work out a deal at a later date and thay he won't be moved, tweets Nick Kypreos.

11:40 a.m.:
Avs forward David Jones, rumored to be a Bruins target, is also on San Jose's and Detroit's radar as well, says John Shannon.

11:26 a.m.: According to the Boston Globe, the B's are also kicking the tires on Jaroslav Spacek. The ex-Hab was sent to Carolina earlier this season for old pal Tomas Kaberle.

Spacek has three goals and nine assists (and a plus-3) in 37 games this year between the Habs and Canes.

11:16 a.m.: According to Dreger, the Bruins — not just the Blackhawks — are in on Johnny Oduya.

The Jets defenseman has two goals and 11 helpers to go with a minus-9 in 63 games. Last year, he had 17 points (two goals) and a minus-15 in 82 games.

11:14 a.m.: JVR is safe. Or not.

Mike Zeisberger of Toronto Sun says "Vann Riemsdyk's agent says they've been 'comfortably' assured by Flyers that his client not going anywhere. 'But you never know.'"

10:50 a.m.:
LeBrun is reporting that the B's have their eyes on a trio of Avs forwards in Daniel Winnik, T.J. Galiardi and David Jones.

"Bruins are still hoping to add both a forward and a defenseman. A source told ESPN.com on Sunday that B’s have interest in Daniel Winnik, T.J. Galiardi and David Jones — all three Colorado Avalanche forwards are very much in play."

Winnick (most experience — 345 GP), Jones (most points — 108) and Galiardi (youngest — 1988) are all intriguing options.

10:42 a.m.: According to Sportsnet beat reporter Louis Jean, the Habs have sent Andrei Kostitsyn to the Preds.

Andrei is reunited with his brother, Sergei, who has 15 goals and 20 helpers this year. Andrei, meanwhile, had 12 and 12 before being shipped south to Music City.

Here you go: "Andrei Kostitsyn à Nashville en retour d'un choix de deuxième ronde."

LeBrun reports that "In return for Kostitsyn, Preds deal 2nd rd pick in 2013 plus return the conditional pick they got in Hal GIll trade."

10:31 a.m.:
Pierre LeBrun thinking the Hawks could land a Jet in Johnny Oduya. As seen in his tweet below, if Chicago doesn't grab him, someone most likely will.

"Blackhawks have interest in Jets pending UFA blue-liner Johnny Oduya among others in their d-man search. Jets almost surely will move Oduya."

As you may recall, it was Oduya involved in the Ilya Kovalchuk trade (debacle) two years ago.

10:21 a.m.: Custance adding that Caps may be looking to move Alexander Semin, only because he likely won't be returning next year.

"I'm hearing that Caps sniper Alexander Semin is as good as gone after this season, so if Caps don't want to let him walk for nothing, they have to at least consider moving him today. Don't think it's likely though."

Semin has 41 points (17 goals) this year on the wing. He tallied 163 points from 2008-10.

10:18 a.m.: McKenzie is hearing some rumors out of Montreal.

"Not confirmed, but hearing very strong rumors of Andrei Kostitsyn to NSH."

10:03 a.m.: Craig Custance of ESPN "wouldn't be surprised to see Ryan Malone moved today. He has a no-trade but would probably welcome a chance to get back on a playoff team. Toronto and Boston would be a good fit and both are looking for size up front."

Malone, an 8-year NHL vet is in his fourth year with the Bolts. He has 10 goals and 31 points this year — 20 points shy of his career high set back in 2007-08. The 6-foot-4, 224-pounder was a physical presence against the B's in the playoffs last summer, registering 15 hits, 10 PIMs and one assist in seven games.

9:59 a.m.:
"Rick Nash arrived at the rink at 9:20 this morning. 'Just another morning,' he said, with a smile."

Stick tap, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch.

9:50 a.m.:
A keeper with local ties, Cory Schneider, was expected to be moved at some point today. According to Mark Spector, however, that doesn't seem to be the case.

"The best available goaltender isn't available. #Canucks Cory Schneider not on market, and I still don't get why?"

9:40 a.m.: Besides Roy, Gaustad and Brown, a few other forwards who could be packing bags are Sam Gagner (Edmonton) and Habs Andrei Kostitsyn and Travis Moen.

Would Bruins fans welcome either Canadien into the mix? If Benny P. could cross the line, then anyone could, if you ask me.

9:37 a.m.: Dreger saying that one Islander is likely on his way off the island.

"PA Parenteau would prefer to stay with the Islanders, however, sources say the Isles are now taking offers on the pending UFA."

Yeah, we're pretty bored, too.

9:08 a.m.: Former UNH standout James van Riemsdyk is targeted by San Jose, says Darren Dreger.

"Flyers still fielding calls on JVR. San Jose believed to have made an offer, but so far Philly isn't willing to move him"

And added, shortly thereafter:

"Belief is San Jose threw Antti Niemi's name at the Flyers."

One would say the Flyers are anti-Antti.

9:06 a.m.: Katie Carrera of the Washington Post on Backstrom/LTIR news: "Placing Backstrom on LTI gives #Caps roughly $7.6 million in room under the salary cap today but only if 19 misses the rest of reg season."

9 a.m.: Sounds like Brian Burke is looking to move a handful of players, including Mike Komisarek, Clarke MacArthur and Mikhail Grabovski, says James Mirtle of The Globe and Mail.

8:57 a.m.: So the Rangers are likely out of the Nash sweepstakes. According to the Post, they're turning their focus to a few Eastern Conference players in Mike Knuble and John Erskine (Washington) and Buffalo's Paul Gaustad.

8:55 a.m.: The Caps have placed Nicklas Backstrom on the LTIR, which should free up some wiggle room and make things interesting today in D.C.

8:48 a.m.:
Garrioch believes the Caps will be making plenty of moves today and tosses Roman Hamrlik's name out there as a player who will be packing his bags and leaving the nation's capital. A few thousand Bruins fans just prayed he doesn't end up in the Hub.

8:33 a.m.: If Sunday's rumors are true, Bruins fans can be happy. In fact, any fan of any East team not named the Rangers should be happy, since it sounds like NYR won't give into Columbus' high demand for Nash.

8:31 a.m.: This year's deadline may be a snoozer compared to last year — at least after noon — as John Shannon points out: "16 Trades on the Deadline last year…2 before noon….Tick,Tick,Tick…Long day ahead."

8:29 a.m.: Bruins fans: want yet another reason to hate either Steve Ott and/or the Canucks? According to Bruce Garrioch, the Nucks want the Dallas pest.

"The Canucks really want Ott. Sense is he won't move. Long day ahead."

8:20 a.m.:
Boston radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub was throwing some potential Bruins moves out this morning and one of which was the idea of sending Tim Thomas and David Krejci to Chicago (who needs goaltending) for Patrick Kane.

While this was nothing more than a random idea by a media member, it does sound interesting.

Kane, 23, has 50 points (14 goals) in 64 games this season and potted 27 and 30, respectively, in the last two seasons.

8:12 a.m.: Below is a list of a few interesting names that could be on the move by day's end.

Dustin Brown, Derek Roy, Lubomir Visnovsky, Mason Raymond, Ryan Smyth, James van Riemsdyk, Brandon Dubinski and Paul Gaustad.

8 a.m.: Deadline day is upon us.

This year's big name on the block is Columbus' own Rick Nash, who is expected to moved at some point before the end of the day.

The big winger has 43 points (21 goals) in 62 games this year.

The Bruins are expecting to get a forward and a defenseman, if rumors are true, but the B's won't be "getting a big name" according to the masses.
