The Red Sox have had a busy offseason on the major league side of things, what with a new manager and general manager at the helm this season. But what about the minor leagues?
ESPN.com recently ranked the farm clubs for all 30 teams in Major League Baseball, and the Red Sox find themselves in the middle of the pack.
Keith Law ranked the Sox as having the 18th best farm system in the league, saying that the Red Sox are very thin at the top of the minor league chain due to the amount that the organization has spent on amateur players. However, he sees some potential breakout candidates in the single A level.
Brandon Jacobs, Garin Cecchini, Henry Owens, Matt Barnes and Sean Coyle are players that Law believes could have a big year in 2012.
In comparison to their rivals, the Sox have a long way to go. The Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays rank second and third on the list, respectively. The only team that the two AL East clubs trail is the San Diego Padres.
The New York Yankees finished at number 10 on the list, and the Baltimore Orioles finished one spot ahead of the Sox at 17.
The St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Royals round out the top five, while the Chicago White Sox finished dead last at number 30.
