Weekend rumors claimed Jonjo Shelvey would join Middlesbrough FC on loan sometime this week. The Blackpool Gazette reports that won’t be happening, but if Shelvey does leave Liverpool FC on loan, Blackpool FC will be his likely destination.

“Blackpool have been assured by Liverpool that Jonjo Shelvey isn’t joining Middlesbrough,” the report reads. “… ‘Pool have been assured they will be the first to know if Kenny Dalglish decides to allow the striker back out.”

Earlier this season, Shelvey spent a successful two-month loan spell at Blackpool. He scored six goals in 10 games as a starter, and won the Football League’s Young Player of the Month award in November.

The 20-year-old would have stayed with Blackpool for at least another month, but he was recalled to LFC after Lucas suffered a season-ending knee injury. It was a move that was made out of necessity to bolster the squad ahead of the busiest months of the season.

Shelvey has seen little playing time since returning to Liverpool three months ago. He impressed in his Premier League debut (as a starter) on Dec. 18, but has only made two league appearances since then.

Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray poured cold water on the rumor, claiming he hadn’t heard anything about Shelvey joining his club.

“I don’t know where that has come from,” Mowbray said. “It’s definitely not come from me or any of my staff, it’s not a done deal, absolutely and definitely not.”
