Tim Wakefield intends to make a decision on his future by this weekend.

Since the end of the 2011 season, Wakefield has expressed a desire to return for his 18th year in Boston. But the Red Sox haven't shown much interest in re-signing the 45-year-old pitcher.

As a result of the dilemma, Wakefield's agent, Barry Meister, said a verdict on his client is looming, according to the Boston Herald.

"We're discussing the options — and he has some options — and over the next few days, we're going to try to figure it out," Meister told the paper. "These next few days is just a period of introspection, where he's trying to decide what to do, whether to play, who to play for."

The knuckleballer is just seven wins shy of vaulting past Roger Clemens as the franchise's all-time leader in wins. Through 17 seasons with the Red Sox, Wakefield has posted a 186-168 record with a 4.43 ERA.

Meister also mentioned that Wakefield wouldn't rule out coming to a spring training camp for a team as a non-roster invitee.

"It's all part of this broader trying to figure out what the next step is," Meister said. "I'd say the next few days will tell the tale."
