It probably comes as no surprise to anyone that Super Bowl XLVI, which featured a rematch between the Patriots and Giants and a halftime performance by seven-time Grammy winner Madonna, achieved a record number of TV viewers.

The live online stream of the game drew another 2.1 million on top of that, an all-time high for a sporting event, according to NBC Sports.

“The Super Bowl XLVI live stream exceeded our expectations in every way,” Kevin Monaghan, NBC Sports Group SVP of business development and managing director digital media, said in a release.  “Increasingly, sports fans are looking to digital coverage as a complementary ‘second screen’ experience, and we delivered on that promise with unprecedented robust coverage.”

Approximately 111.3 million people watched the game on NBC, the highest number in U.S. history. It was the third consecutive year the Super Bowl set the TV audience record.
