Who Is the Best Hockey East Defenseman of All Time? The best defensemen in Hockey East history more often than not have come from one of two teams — Boston College or Boston University.

The Eagles and Terriers have had a history of putting out successful players at every position, and the blue line is no exception, with the Eagles really manufacturing the d-men.

The best-known example of this is Brian Leetch, one of the best defensemen to ever lace up skates. Leetch played just one year at the Heights, but he left a mark. Leetch recorded 47 points in 37 games before moving to the NHL. All he did at the next level was win a Stanley Cup and a Conn Smythe in 1994 while adding a pair of Norris trophies as the league's best defenseman.

Mike Mottau was another Eagle blue liner who found success with Boston College. The Quincy, Mass., native played at BC in the late 90s, and he even won the Hobey Baker in 2000. A decade before Mottau, Greg Brown was another effective BC defenseman. Brown's time with the Eagles saw an Olympics appearance in Calgary in 1988, and he eventually became a second-round pick of the Sabres.

Matt Gilroy is the lone Terrier on this list, and he's still building his resume at the NHL level. Gilroy has spent the last few years in the NHL with Rangers and Lightning after enjoying a four-year career under the tutelage of Jack Parker. His career at BU culminated with a national championship in 2009.
