If Winnipeg Jets forward Jim Slater could go anywhere this trade deadline, his first choice of a destination wouldn't be anywhere an NHL team plays.
Slater wants to visit outer space, he told the crowd at a Jets charity event hosted by a local fire department. He said that when he was growing up, he didn't want to be a firefighter like many young boys dream of. Instead, he always wanted to be an astronaut.
Slater's also willing to put his money where his mouth is, and would buy a trip to outer space if he could.
"That's what I would spend my money on," Slater said, according to The Globe and Mail. "I would spend $250,000 to go to outer space for 30 seconds [rather than] have a brand new car."
He went on to explain that he'd tried to go see the space shuttle launch from his grandmother's house near Cape Canaveral, Fla., but the launch date was moved each time he could go.
Slater is an unrestricted free agent after this year after playing out a two-year deal with the Jets. While he probably isn't launching off anytime this offseason, maybe he could one day sign with the Dallas Stars as a compromise.
