It may have come as something of a surprise to football fans to hear that the Miami Dolphins had traded Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears on late Tuesday afternoon. However, a report has surfaced that may explain things a little bit better.

The New York Post reports that Marshall allegedly hit a woman outside a Manhattan nightclub on early Sunday morning after an altercation inside the club spilled outside.

According to the Post, Marshall was involved in a fight inside the club that led to him being thrown out shortly before 4 a.m.

Since only bad things can happen at 4 in the morning, an argument ensued outside as well, and that's when Marshall allegedly hit a 24-year-old woman in the left eye. The blow left the woman with a black eye. It is unknown, however, whether or not Marshall meant to hit the woman.

What is known, though, is police are investigating the matter. The woman, Christin Myles, waited until Monday to file a police report.

Coincidentally, that was just a day before Marshall was shipped to the Bears, and the Chicago organization acknowledged they knew of the situation.

"Both the Bears and Dolphins were aware of what occurred over the weekend. We decided to move forward with the trade. We have high expectations for Brandon as a Bear," Chicago general manager Phil Emery said in a statement.

This is far from the first off-field issue for Marshall. In fact, he was stabbed by his wife less than a year ago during a domestic dispute. His wife was arrested for the act, but charges were eventually dropped.

Marshall has been arrested multiple times, and he was suspended in 2008 for violating the league's conduct policy. He was also diagnosed with borderline personality disorder in 2011.
