FORT MYERS, Fla. –– Carl Crawford was slated to attempt 20 bunts on Tuesday morning. Although his recovery from offseason wrist surgery is progressing, he will likely start the season on the disabled list.

Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentine suggested as much before the team's game against the Rays, Crawford's former team.

"I'm probably thinking he’s going to stay [in Fort Myers]," Valentine said. "Stay where it's warm as much as possible to get the most productive days and we're working on staff that will be here with him."

During the first week of spring training, the four-time All-Star was initially on track to start on Opening Day. But after sensing pain in his wrist during, Crawford was sidelined for a week.

Crawford spent last week hitting off a tee and working on his fielding. He eventually transitioned to taking hacks in the batting cages and remains encouraged by his progress.

"He thinks he could play in a game right now," Valentine said. "He feels that good. His wrist has no problem at all. He has resided in the fact that there is a program the medical staff has him on that he's going to stay on religiously."

But a look at Valentine's comments reveals that a stint on the disabled list appears inevitable for Crawford.
