The Red Sox lost a legend on Tuesday.

Mel Parnell, the famed Boston Red Sox starting pitcher, passed away Tuesday at the age of the 89, according to a report from WWLTV New Orleans.

Parnell had spent his entire playing career with Boston. After being drafted in 1947 at the age of 17, he played with the Red Sox until he retired in 1956.

Over those 10 seasons, Parnell accumulated a 123-50 record with a 3.50 ERA, and counts a 1956 no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox among his many accomplishments.

When a torn muscle in his arm forced him into retirement, Parnell stayed with baseball. He had a stint as part of the Red Sox broadcast team and held management roles with several Red Sox farm teams.
