Is it the hockey fan in me talking, or is soccer picking things up a notch lately?

First, the United States men’s team defeats Italy for the first time ever last month — now, opponents are forgoing the typical dive techniques and are heading straight to the ol’ haymaker.

In a girl’s soccer match between Chester High School and Lewisville High School (South Carolina), Annette McCullough was lightly tripped by an opponent but she sure didn’t take it lightly, as seen in the video by WBTV below.

“Some incidental contact ended in one girl going down and she just got up and started pummeling,” referee Alan Parker told WBTV after the game. ” It’s unfortunate, it really is. Contact is a part of soccer, but when you retaliate like that, obviously, there is no place in the game for that.

“Occasionally you have players that go at it, on the field together, but in this case it was just one girl pummeling the other girl,” he added. “And she didn’t stop, which is even more egregious.”

According to reports, the victim wasn’t bleeding, but had several “swollen knots behind her right ear” and a mark on her neck.

Quote of the Day

“I think [Tebow will] have a big impact on [Sanchez] in terms of just trying to maybe push him a little bit more. Not to say that Mark needs to get pushed, but in a way that you know, Tebow is a winning quarterback. Mark is a winning quarterback, too, you got to understand that Mark took us to two AFC championship games.”

Red Sox players are funny. Trust me. Fine, don’t trust me — just watch a video that proves it.
