Violence continues to escalate in South America, where hooligans have become much more frightening than their European counterparts.
The latest case of soccer violence comes from Quito, Ecuador where a Liga de Quito fan was killed in the team’s last match against Emelec.
The fan, 26, died from brain trauma after his had hit the stands during the altercation.
According to the victim’s brother, he had refused to share a sip of his beer. The assailant punched him and the fan hit his head on the stands.
The death highlights a frightening pattern of friendly fire that has hit South America. Earlier this year, a fan was killed in Argentina as dueling factions of Nueva Chicago fought for territory.
In this case, it was another Quito fan that attacked, and the family is asking for the Club’s help in identifying him.
This new trend creates new problems in that it is harder to prevent the violence by simply separating the distinct fan bases, a custom common in Europe and South America.
Quito is currently participating in the Copa Libertadores and has not announced any memorial or game cancellations in regards to the death.
