Safety Steve Gregory will visit the Patriots late Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium, according to a source.

Gregory, who went undrafted out of Syracuse in 2006, has played all six of his NFL seasons with the Chargers. He's a free safety by trade who has also played on the strong side and in the slot, and Gregory has developed a reputation as a valuable player on special teams.

The Chargers have expressed interest in retaining Gregory, according to a source, but the 29-year-old is looking for more playing time elsewhere. San Diego already has a Pro Bowl free safety in Eric Weddle.

The Broncos, Panthers and Texans have also shown interest in Gregory since Tuesday's opening to free agency.
