Liverpool FC has added midfielder Dan Smith to its bulging arsenal of talented youngsters. The Reds beat out Manchester City in the race for Smith's signature, according to the Crewe Chronicle.

Smith, 16, was the crown jewel of the widely admired Crewe Alexandra youth system. He had yet to play for Crewe's first team, but the Reds decided he is worth the reported initial investment of £300,000 ($480,600).

"We are naturally disappointed that Dan has decided to sign for Liverpool, Crewe Alexandra spokesman Rob Wilson said.

"The club has received an undisclosed fee and future add-ons but we would have much preferred to have seen him play for our first team."

Smith, who has represented England at youth levels, joins Danny Murphy and Rob Jones among the ranks of players who have moved from Crewe to LFC.
