The Red Sox will place the 2011 American League MVP runner-up on the 15-day disabled list after he was diagnosed with a subluxed right shoulder.
Ellsbury collided with Rays shortstop Reid Brignac at second base in the fourth inning of Friday's 12-2 victory and went to Massachusetts General Hospital to undergo an MRI. The test revealed the injury, with reports claiming the Gold Glove winner could miss up to two months of action.
While Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine didn't divulge any more details, he offered perspective on the issue.
"Some guy threw me down at home plate one time and it happened to me –– it's painful," Valentine said. "Everything is individual. I don't want to make it seem like because I've experienced these either personally or with players that the same thing’s going to happen. This is a very unique individual and it's an individual situation."
To fill Ellsbury's void on the roster on Saturday, Valentine slotted Cody Ross in center field and penciled Mike Aviles into the leadoff spot. The Red Sox also promoted Che Hsuan-Lin to provide defensive stability.
Valentine also said surgery hasn't been mentioned for Ellsbury.
