Ray Allen Probably Needs Surgery on Troublesome Ankle, But Trying Other Methods to Get Back for PlayoffsWALTHAM, Mass. — The devolving state of Ray Allen's right ankle took another downward turn when the ailing shooting guard said at Saturday's shootaround that he will probably require surgery.

"If this was early in the season, I'd probably have surgery now," Allen said of his bothersome ankle, which has sidelined him since April 10.

Allen is trying to avoid the surgery route because it would likely eliminate any chance of him returning to the Celtics for the playoffs. Any timetable for his recovery is purely speculative, but Allen has had procedures on his ankle in the past and said it could take as long as eight weeks to return to the court after surgery.

The Celtics have two game plans in place for the Hawks for now: One that includes Allen and one that does not. The latter is in place for Game 1.

Allen had a cortisone shot this week, and took part partially in Saturday's practice, hoping that by simply being careful, he can get back on the court. He expects to go under the knife eventually, though.

"It's just inevitable," Allen said. "Talking to a few doctors, they said at the end of the season, you're going to need surgery."
