Mikey Stolzenberg is proof that the heart is the most important part of the body when it comes to sports.

The 12-year-old dazzled during a recent lacrosse tournament, scoring three goals while playing on the championship-winning team. What made the accomplishment even more special, however, are the obstacles he must overcome; both on and off the field.

Stolzenberg had his arms and legs amputated in 2008 after being rushed to the emergency room with a bacterial infection that was not responding to antibiotics, according to SnipersLacrosse.com. Stolzenberg, who was 8 at the time, reportedly went into septic shock, which required a ventilator and dialysis for seven weeks. Doctors were eventually able to treat Stolzenberg with effective antibiotics, meaning he’d survive, but his hands and feet had to be amputated as a result of irreversible oxygen deprivation to the limbs.

Most who undergo such might be disheartened, especially if you’re a sports enthusiast like Stolzenberg. The youngster wasn’t about to let what happened deter his determination, though, and he’s since taken up lacrosse despite his disabilities.

And not only does Stolzenberg play the sport, but he excels, showing that anything really is possible.
