Anthony Gonzalez Released by PatriotsThe Patriots’ crowded wide receiver stable became a little more spacious on Tuesday afternoon when the team announced it had released Anthony Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, a 2007 first-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts, was signed by the Patriots back in March. The Ohio State product has played in just 11 games since the start of the 2009 season, with just five catches.

The veteran wideout spoke about how happy he was to be joining the Patriots just a couple of months ago upon arriving in New England.

“I’m excited to be here,” Gonzalez said. “It’s probably the best professional football environment there is, so I’m excited for the opportunity. I love the east coast. I love this part of the country, so I’m excited. I’m happy and just glad for the opportunity. To me, it’s the perfect fit in a lot of ways.”

The Patriots also announced that they’ve signed seventh-round draft pick Alfonzo Dennard. The Nebraska alum was named the 2011 Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year and was named to the First Team All-Big Ten team in his final season with the Cornhuskers.
