Are the Red Sox or Tigers More Likely to Make the Playoffs? The Red Sox and Tigers were both expected to contend for a championship this year, but entering Tuesday's game, you wouldn't know it by looking at the standings.

The two teams are a combined 47-49 on the season, and the Red Sox have never been above .500 in 2012.

Detroit was expected to run away with the AL Central after adding Prince Fielder to their lineup this offseason, while the Red Sox were hoping to stay healthy and shake off their September swoon from last year.

Instead, both teams have stumbled out of the gate. The Tigers swept the Sox to begin the season, but since then have sputtered through the rest of the schedule. The Red Sox started out slow, but have been steadily playing better baseball and continue to knock on the door of playing .500 baseball.

Both teams are still very much in the playoff hunt, however. The Tigers are still in shouting distance of the AL Central lead and will likely be in the hunt there all season long. While the Red Sox have the more competitive AL East to climb their way up the standings in, they have plenty of time left to do it. Additionally, both teams will have a chance at claiming the second wild card spot announced this year for the first time.
