This year’s Indianapolis 500 won’t go down as the hottest one on record, but it was close. The temperature hit 91 degrees at the end of Sunday’s race, leaving it one degree shy of the 1937 record, according to the Associated Press.
When you get to temperatures that high, the environment becomes rather uncomfortable regardless of the exact figure, which is why many fans were left seeking shade before, during and after the race. After all, who can really tell the difference between 91 and 92 degrees?
Dario Franchitti won this year’s race, allowing him to drink the bottle of milk, as is the annual custom for the winner. It’s the third time he’s won the Indy 500, so he’s been in the position before, but Sunday’s high temperatures definitely left him seeking more than just milk after the race.
