Thousands Expected to Turn Out for Run-Walk to Home Base at Fenway ParkThe Run-Walk to Home Base isn't a new idea. But this time around, thousands of people are accepting the chance to stretch their legs for a good cause.

About 2,000 runners and walkers are expected to run the 9K or walk the three miles on Sunday for the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program, according to a New Balance news release.

The event begins and ends at Fenway Park, and hundreds of members of the military and veterans are expected to join those running and walking for the cause. Last year, more than 10,000 people came to Fenway Park to support those taking on the challenge. Activities include care packages, a family fun zone and exhibits. Gate B opens to the public at 5:30 a.m., and Gate E will open at 6.

The opening ceremony is at 7:15 a.m., with the first wave leaving at 8 and activities continuing until 11:45.

The Home Base program provides support services and clinical care for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, including community education and research into post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

As well as many military members, veterans, runners, walkers and other supports, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and representatives from New Balance, the Red Sox and Massachusetts General Hospital are expected to attend.
