Will Middlebrooks Continues Rapid Progression, Showing Power to All Fields During Historic RunKANSAS CITY, Mo. — The major league experience is only getting better for Will Middlebrooks.

A day after blasting his first career home run — a grand slam at that –the Red Sox third baseman continued to show his power in Monday’s 11-5 win over the Royals, blasting two homers and driving in five runs to highlight his first multi-homer game.

“I’m really comfortable up [at the plate],” Middlebrooks said. “Just trying to carry over what I started in Pawtucket this year. Individual results — I wasn’t really looking at that initially. I wanted to come here and do whatever I could to help the team win games.”

He’s achieving both goals at a rapid pace. With an extra-base hit in his fourth straight game, Middlebrooks became just the fourth player since 1918 to accomplish the feat, joining Enos Slaughter (1938), Coco Laboy (1969) and Yoenis Cespedes (2012).

To add to the accolades, Middlebrooks was dialed in all around Kauffman Stadium. He crushed his first home run narrowly inside the right field foul poll and hit the left field pole with his second, an achievement that even stunned Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine.

“I’ve never seen a guy hit both foul poles and then almost take the center field fence down with a line drive,” Valentine said. “Those were three impressive swings. He’s been a very impressive player so far. We didn’t even get to talk about the home run [on Sunday]. That was one of the furthest ones we’ve seen at Fenway.”

Middlebrooks went 3-for-5 for the game, and has driven in nine runs already during his short time in the bigs.
