Boston Mayor Thomas Menino Mistakenly Refers to Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo as ‘KJ’ and ‘Hondo’ (Video)

The Boston Celtics look to have turned back the clock and found a much younger, more spry group of players in the year’s postseason run. But it appears that Boston Mayor Thomas Menino may have turned things back a little too far.

Menino wanted to pass on some praise to the successful hometown team on Wednesday, even calling out some Celtics players by name. The issue: it wasn’t the right names.

“Mumbles,” as Menino is jokingly known as in the Boston area, stumbled over his words and even referred back to some former NBA greats when attempting to credit the team on their success.

Menino may have had a brief flashback to the olden days, as he referred to Kevin Garnett as “KJ” — as in former Suns guard Kevin Johnson — during the interview. And possibly even worse, the Mayor continued on to explain that “Hondo” — as in former Celtic great and NBA Hall of Famer John Havlicek — not Rajon Rondo was the “heart of the Celtics.”

The video is another priceless Menino mixup, as he’s had many in the past. Most notably Menino is known for referring to Wes Welker as “Wes Wreckler,” and crediting Jason Varitek for kicking a Super Bowl winning field goal “through the uprights,” rather than Adam Vinatieri.
