Boston University Leaving America East to Join Patriot League, Effective 2013-2014 Academic YearAnother NCAA team is on the move.

Boston University announced on Friday that they will accept an invitation to join the Patriot League. Their membership will start effective the 2013-2014 academic year. BU leaves the America East conference, where they have been a member since its foundation in 1979.

There is no major change in style of play, as both America East and the Patriot League are Division I schools in the NCAA. All but four of the university's teams will make the change. Men's and women's ice hockey teams will remain in Hockey East, which has been a comfortable spot for both teams, as both have won championships in the last three seasons. The women's team won in 2012, and the men won in 2009.

The men's rowing team will remain in the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges and the wrestling team will stay a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Patriot League does not sponsor those two sports.

BU "has a strong tradition of excellence in academics and Division I athletics, both of which reflect the core values of the Patriot League," said Carolyn Schlie Femovich, Patriot League executive director. "They will strengthen the league both in the classroom and on the field of play."

Other teams in the Patriot League include American University, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy.
