Diego Maradona’s Al Wasl Makes Contract Offer to Didier Drogba

The club Al Wasl, managed by Diego Maradona, made a bid for former Chelsea star Didier Drogba after defeating Al Muharraq of Bahrain 3-1 in the first leg the GCC Champions League final.

The win gives Maradona a good chance to win his first trophy with the U.A.E. club, but the president of Al Wasl, Marwan bin Bayat, does not believe that its bid for Drogba will prevent the former Chelsea striker from signing with a Chinese club.

Bin Bayat did not say how much he offered, although he admitted that it was less than what the Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua — who also signed Argentine coach Sergio Batista and former Chelsea player, Nicolas Anelka — offered him.

Bin Bayat said the club is seriously interested in Drogba, but added that the African striker "seems more interested in China."

Maradona wants the club to hire big names after a season in which his team finished eighth in the twelve-team U.A.E. Pro League. One of the goals in the victory of Al Wasl was converted by the Uruguayan Juan Olivera, who is considered a key player on the team.

The second leg will be played in Dubai on Sunday. The GCC is a competitive league that includes teams that did not qualify for the Asian Champions League.
