Joe Maddon, Rays Unveil Bizarre ‘Throwback’ Jerseys (Photo)

The Tampa Bay Rays (or Devil Rays at the time) entered Major League Baseball in 1998. So why will they be wearing jerseys deemed to be 1979-esque?

Surely, I can't be the only one confused by this whole concept. The whole wanting to get involved in the MLB's "Turn Back the Clock" festivities is understandable, especially from a marketing standpoint, but let's not go altering history here.

Manager Joe Maddon modeled a retro uniform on Wednesday that the Rays will be wearing when they host the Detroit Tigers on June 30. The jerseys have a retro feel and actually look pretty authentic, but as mentioned, the Rays weren't around in the 1970s. So why bother?

In any event, the "throwback" uniforms contain lots and lots of blue. Eiffel 65 must be proud.
