Bergeron was awarded the Frank J. Selke Trophy at the 2012 NHL Awards Wednesday night. The Selke Trophy is handed out to “the forward who best excels in defensive aspects of the game.”
The Boston Bruins forward won the award over St. Louis’ David Backes and former three-time Selke Trophy winner Pavel Datsyuk of Detroit.
This is Bergeron’s first Selke Trophy, and also his first nomination for the award. The 26-year-old led the NHL in plus-minus at +36, was the league leader in faceoff wins with 973 and had a faceoff win percentage of 59.3 percent.
Bergeron also won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011 and an olympic gold medal with Canada in 2010.
The winner of the Selke Trophy is voted on by members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of each season.
