He's the latest in a string of players that includes Pedro Ciriaco and Daniel Nava that has filled the void with David Ortiz out of the lineup. For the time being, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine likes Ross as the team's DH.
"I think so far, it's been fine," Valentine said. "Cody enjoys doing it and I think the more we can keep him in the lineup but also keep his body in tip top shape, the more productive he'll be so maybe it's a little blessing there that he can do that."
While Ross has provided firepower this week — clubbing three, three-run home runs — he isn't trying to fill Ortiz's shoes.
"You can't make up for David," Ross said. "Nobody in baseball can, he's one of the best hitters in the game. You just try to pick him up and do your part."
So far, he's done so admirably.
