The Red Sox outfielder, who has been battling a variety of injuries, tweaked his groin while running the bases with the Portland Sea Dogs on July 5. After a week of recovery, he'll be back on the diamond on Thursday with the Pawtucket Red Sox when they take on the Buffalo Bisons at 7:05 p.m. at McCoy Stadium. The game will be shown on NESN.
Crawford will be starting a new, 20-day rehab assignment with the PawSox.
Crawford first landed on the disabled list after complications from offseason surgery on his left wrist. He then sprained a ligament in his left elbow. Crawford has said that lingering pain from the elbow injury may mean he needs surgery sometime, but both the Red Sox and Crawford have been optimistic that Crawford can work through any remaining pain and join Boston this season.
Crawford's injuries have led some to wonder whether he should return this season at all, but considering Crawford's progress through the minors in his rehab stints, he's on track to join the Sox shortly if this set of rehab games goes well.
