Chipper Jones said in a speech before Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game that he wasn’t going out losing. He and the rest of the National League squad made sure that was the case, dominating the American League and walking away with an 8-0 victory and home-field advantage in the upcoming World Series.

Jones received just one at-bat in the contest, and it came in the sixth inning with the game already well in hand. But he made sure it counted. The 40-year-old smacked a base hit the other way, capping off an All-Star Game career that includes eight selections. He’ll soon cap off his entire professional baseball career later this year.

The Kansas City fans showed their appreciation Tuesday for Jones’ contributions to the game, showering him with a standing ovation as he stepped up to the plate. It was the first time Jones has ever played in Kansas City, in fact, which is surprising considering he’s played in every other major league city.

The ovation was also a far cry from the negative reception the K.C. fans gave Robinson Cano during Monday’s Home Run Derby.

Jones was added to replace the injured Matt Kemp in Tuesday’s All-Star festivities, and everyone knew it was going to be an emotional scene when he entered the game. But what actually transpired could only be described as picture perfect.

Quote of the Day

Those two kids right there are going to be the face of baseball. Pretty soon. As guys like myself and [Derek] Jeter and A-Rod [Alex Rodriguez] shuffle off, the torch is going to be passed to those guys. Those two are going to be the marquee guys for years to come. I would say that the game of baseball is in pretty good hands.
