David Ortiz 'Proud' of Jason Varitek as Red Sox Honor Legendary Catcher at FenwayBOSTON — It was a day to celebrate Jason Varitek's career.

Four months after the ex-Red Sox catcher announced his retirement at JetBlue Park, Varitek received a formal sendoff in a ceremony at Fenway Park prior to Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.

As the elder statesmen of the Red Sox, David Ortiz — who won two titles along with Varitek — relished the moment.

"I saw the ceremony he did in spring training and it was very emotional," Ortiz said. "He's the kind of guy that he likes to be a tough guy, but then when you get behind closed doors [Ortiz laughs]. When a ceremony like that goes down, you did what you were supposed to do. He did all he could for this organization and me, personally, I'm proud of him."

While Red Sox skipper Bobby Valentine never managed Varitek, he spoke fondly of the catcher's career.

"A man's man, a big-game player," Valentine said. "The guy you'd want on your team and hate to have him against you."

In 15 seasons with the Red Sox, Varitek made three All-Star teams and caught a record four no-hitters.
