Kelly Shoppach Getting String Of Nods Over Jarrod Saltalamacchia Due to Stretch Against LeftiesBOSTON –– For the second straight day, catcher Kelly Shoppach received the starting nod.

According to Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, the decision has nothing to do with Jarrod Saltalamacchia's recent 1-for-24 slump. In this case, it's a testament to Shoppach's success against left-handers.

This season, Shoppach has uncorked three home runs and eight RBIs while batting .250 against southpaws. Meanwhile, Saltalamacchia is hitting .179 with one long ball and five RBIs versus lefties.

"That’s what Kelly is here for, to hit against lefthanders, and he’s been doing a very good job at that," Valentine said. "I know Salty started a couple of games against lefthanders in his streak, but might as well give Kelly a few games in a row.

"When it presents itself, you usually do what you’re going to do. It’s not about Salty. It’s about Kelly."

Although Shoppach struck out three times in Wednesday's victory over the White Sox, the catcher showcased his power earlier in the week, launching a pinch-hit, two-run homer against Chicago on Tuesday.

With Felix Doubront on the mound, Shoppach demonstrated his game-calling skills, guiding Doubront to his 10th win of the season. In the outing, Doubront allowed one run and four hits through six innings.
