Dirty is cool. "Distressed" jeans will cost you about $100 at Banana Republic, while hair products actually brag about creating an "unwashed" look.

What you do with your body can be undone at the end of the day, though, when you take off those ripped jeans and wash the gunk out of your hair. An intentionally weathered building is mostly permanent.

The builders of the Barclays Center, the soon-to-be home of the Brooklyn Nets, nonetheless are hopping on the trendy train. The exterior of the building is covered in "weathering steel," according to The New York Times, making the sports and entertainment venue a massive chunk of reddish brown Cor-Ten at the intersection of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues in Brooklyn.

This sort of thing always seems like a good idea at the time. Bostonians may recall the "brutalist" architecture of the current City Hall, which was constructed in 1968 and is now considered an eyesore by many people. Within a few years, the Barclays Center's rusty exterior could make it the equivalent of a gigantic Furby sitting in the middle of Atlantic Yards.
