Olympic Pole Vaulter’s Pole Snaps in Midair, Nearly Breaks His Neck (Video)

Ever watch Olympic pole vaulting and not gasp at how far that pole actually bends while holding 150-plus pound athletes? Well, the nightmare has finally become reality.

On Wednesday afternoon, Cuban pole vaulter Lazaro Borges went up for his attempt at claiming the gold. But when Borges actually stuck the pole into the ground for his vault, imminent disaster struck.

Borges lifted himself high into the air, as is normal for any pole vaulter, but just as he was set to reach the pinnacle of his rise the pole pushing him up snapped underneath him. The result was a backwards somersault down to the padded mat below, but realistically it could have been much worse.

That has to be one of the scariest sequences in all of sports, and yet Borges seemed to rebound like the incident had never even occurred.
