Adam Greenberg Has Wish Granted, Will Get Major League At-Bat After Inking One-Day Contract With MarlinsAdam Greenberg
‘s patience and perseverance is about to be rewarded.

Greenberg, whose major league career seemingly ended back in 2005, will have his wish granted on Tuesday when he steps into the batter’s box as a member of the Miami Marlins.

Marlins president David Samson announced to Greenberg on NBC’s Today Show on Thursday that Miami planned to sign him to a one-day big league contract. The signing comes more than seven years after Greenberg was hit in the head on the only major league pitch he ever saw. The beanball left the former Cubs prospect with vertigo and vision issues that have prevented him from reaching the majors ever since.

Greenberg’s optimism and desire never wavered, though. He bounced around the minors and recently played for Isreal in the World Baseball Classic qualifying round in Jupiter, Fla. Fans even took notice of his passion over the years and started a petition to get Greenberg another major league at-bat. That support is now paying big dividends for the 31-year-old.

“I’m extremely proud to extend this opportunity to Adam,” Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said in a statement. “He has earned this chance as his love and passion for the game never diminished, despite his career tragically being cut short. I look forward to seeing Adam step up to the plate and realizing his comeback dream next Tuesday night.”

Simply put, Greenberg is mentally prepared for his second chance.

“From the bottom of my heart, I’ll be ready for it,” Greenberg said Thursday.

No player has ever had his big league career end on the first pitch, except Greenberg. After Tuesday, Greenberg’s name will no longer be the exception, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
