Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine just had that look when he took second baseman Dustin Pedroia aside during Wednesday night's game against the Yankees.

Pedroia was returning to the dugout and thought maybe something was wrong with his fielding. It turns out the manager was ready to tell him to take a hike — because his second son was being born.

"I thought he was going to yell at me because that line drive almost hit me in the head," Pedroia said, according to ESPNBoston.com. "He was really calm. Usually, Bobby just comes out and says it, but he was really calm about it. I was like, 'Bobby, man, just spit it out.' "

Valentine told Pedroia that his wife, Kelli, had gone into labor, and Pedroia immediately took off to be with her.

The Pedroias' second son, Cole, came home from the hospital Friday, and Pedroia rejoined his teammates Saturday.
