Elisha Cuthbert, Once Subject of Sean Avery's 'Sloppy Seconds' Comment, Engaged to Dion Phaneuf (Photos)Another actress-athlete tandem is ready to take the plunge.

Elisha Cuthbert, star of The Girl Next Door and the hit comedy series Happy Endings, announced that she is engaged to hard-hitting Maple Leafs defenseman Dion Phaneuf, according to multiple reports.

Cuthbert has enjoyed a successful film career, and has garnered attention for her beautiful looks, even ranking fourth in the 2008 UK Edition of FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World. She’ll once again be starring in Happy Endings this fall — which is big news itself — but Cuthbert seems just as excited about the upcoming wedding, reportedly using the word “happily” four times while making the announcement.

Phaneuf brings plenty of fame to the relationship as well. The 27-year-old blue liner is a three-time NHL All-Star, and is widely considered one of the game’s most physical players.

Cuthbert and Phaneuf have dated since 2008, so the announcement shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. It’s also good to see them doing so well, despite Sean Avery‘s controversial comments back in December of that year.

Avery, of course, dated Cuthbert before Phaneuf, which led him to take a verbal jab at the defenseman before the two played against each other.

“I’m just going to say one thing,” Avery said before his Stars played Phaneuf’s Flames. “I’m really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about, but enjoy the game tonight.”

Avery soon faced plenty of discipline, and he’s now without an NHL job, so it looks like Phaneuf may have won this bout without even dropping the gloves.

In any event, mazel tov to the two love birds.
